Great Alpine Road to receive $422,000 for restoration

State Members for Gippsland East and Benalla, Tim Bull and Bill Sykes today announced that a further section the Great Alpine Road will benefit from the Victorian Government’s $170 million package to address the condition of Victorian roads.

The Great Alpine Road is a key tourist route connecting East Gippsland and the north east of Victoria.

“The $422,000 works program, to be managed by VicRoads, will be carried out on a 600 metre section of the road at Cobungra near the boundary of the two electorates.

Today’s funding announcement is in addition to the $910,000 recently announced to repair two sections of the road to the south, between the towns of Ensay and Bruthen,” Mr Bull said.

“As part of the repairs to the Great Alpine Road, pavement stabilisation and restoration works will be undertaken.

“This involves ripping up the existing deteriorated road pavement, stabilising the road materials, re sheeting sections of the road with new materials, re surfacing, line marking and constructing an entirely new section of road,” said Mr Bull.

Mr Sykes added, “these works will improve the road’s base, surfaces and durability for heavy vehicles, helping to prolong the road’s life.”

“The $170 million package will be delivered across three years, and will be a big improvement on the previous system that allocated funds on an annual basis.

“This program builds on the $45 million committed in October last year to ‘Repair and Restore’ Victorian roads,” said Mr Sykes.

The new $170 million three-year package will allow VicRoads to develop a comprehensive program of works to be rolled out across the state.

The contract for the works, which will be managed by VicRoads, is expected to be awarded within the coming months.
